A Bibliography of Published Literature on the Bali Chamba of Cameroon & Nigeria

Compiled by Jude D. Fokwang

The following bibliography details the names of scholars (and their works) who have researched and published on the Bali or the Chamba more broadly. These authors include expatriate scholars, some of whom are leading authorities on traditional religion and ritual among the Chamba. Others are Cameroonian and Cameroonist historians, political scientists and geographers who have studied and written on vital aspects of Bali/Chamba scholarship.

This bibliography has been compiled to assist scholars and students of Bali society as they pursue their scholarship. Non-academics may also benefit from reviewing the list for relevant documentation on issues about which they would like to read further. Needless to add that this list would inspire interest in researching aspects of Bali society that haven’t been explored or underexplored.

NB: This bibliography includes authors who have published on Bali Nyonga, the Bali of the Cameroon Grasslands or the Chamba in Nigeria and Cameroon. It does not include Bali authors who have written on themes or academic topics not directly concerned with the (history, geography, economics, politics, anthropology etc. of the Bali). The list shall be updated as new literature becomes available. For additions to this list, kindly reach out to the author via his contact page.

Powerful Resource and Repertoire of study for anyone hungry to learn about the history, traditions and culture of Bali Nyonga and the Chamba clan. Having these resources in one place is a great service to our people, and thanks for putting it together.

  2. Gabby Njinimbot

It is quiet impressive the amount of literature that’s been written about the Bali clan. Hopefully you putting this together will X-ray even more about the Bali Nyonga. We need more exposure like this. This is a great work you have done and I applaud you for that. Very helpful. Keep it up.

  3. Denis Kehdinga Sema

This is a wonderful piece. It is very insightful.

  4. Kennedy D. Nyongbela

This is an incredible compilation of Bali Nyonga history, traditional institutions and cultural practices. Focus will now be on the natural resources that the Bali Nyonga Fondom is endowed with.

  5. Rev Fomuso Sama

This is actually a wonderful aid to researchers, scholars and all sons and daughters of Bali Nyonga. Thanks for the initiative.

  6. Ken Gwanmesia

Impressive selection Ni Jude. Personally, I am interested in acquiring quite a few of these if not all. I’m not an academic per se, but my curiosity about our culture leaves me no other option than reading the works of those of you who have dedicated a good portion of your lives to researching and educating the rest of us earthlings. To that I say thank you.
Little ask: Can you add hyperlinks to where some of these publications can be purchased if they are available for sale online? Maybe links to Amazon.com or spears media etc. That way, interested parties like myself can continue to drink from the well of your knowledge. Again thanks for this.

  7. Jude Fokwang

Thanks for your comments and appreciation of the work we do. I have begun to add hyperlinks to some of the titles that are available in print.
