Contemporary Documentary Films from Cameroon

I’d like to shine a spotlight on the remarkable works of one of Cameroon’s most celebrated filmmakers, Jean Marie Teno. If you’d like to learn more about Jean Marie Teno’s work, the award-winning book, “Reel Resistance – The Cinema of Jean-Marie Teno,” James Currey (2020), will give you even more details.

The following two documentary films, produced by Jean Marie, shed light on contemporary Cameroonian issues that will greatly complement many courses in African studies. I’d like to encourage colleagues to consider adopting the films for their teaching this Fall.

So here we go!

1961 (25 mins 30 secs) by Stella TCHUISSE

A young woman investigates the Anglophone crisis in Cameroon, marked by violence and disrupted lives, contrasting with Francophone indifference. She explores historical roots, uncovering disparities in schoolbooks and engaging students about key events like the 1961 plebiscite and the Foumban conference that shaped the country’s reunification.

Gateway to Dreams/A la poursuite de ses rêves directed by Nene Fembe and produced by Jean Marie Teno (39 minutes 40 seconds)

Set in the once-thriving Pamol plantation, the film explores a community built on hierarchy, education, and dreams of upward mobility. Amid the Anglophone crisis, separatist fighters disrupt the estate, forcing families into exile or fear. A woman, now a director and daughter of a retired worker, returns to confront the shattered hopes of her childhood. The film questions the viability of aspirations in a rigid society where most children lack access to quality education, leaving little room for social advancement.
